The Contribution of Mediumistic Writing Analysis to the Survival of Consciousness | Heberth de Souza

Heberth Paulo de Souza is a doctor affiliated with the Research Center in Spirituality and Health (NUPES), School of Medicine, Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora (UFJF). He graduated in Languages (Universidade Federal de São João del-Rei), is a Specialist in the Portuguese Language (Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Minas Gerais), Master in Portuguese Language (Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Minas Gerais), Doctor in Linguistic Studies (Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais) and Post-doctor in Spirituality and Health (Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora).

The aim of this study is to investigate the stylistic fit of literary texts under different genres, produced by supposed spiritual authors, obtained while under mediumistic trance.

The stylistic characteristics was investigated in three mediumistic literary works, comparing the features present in the texts produced by the authors “in vitam” and the features identified in the texts supposedly written by the same authors “postmortem” through mediums: i) Poems allegedly produced by five authors, published in Parnaso do Além-Túmulo, through the medium Chico Xavier: João de Deus, Antero de Quental and Guerra Junqueiro (from Portugal) and Cruz e Sousa and Augusto dos Anjos (from Brazil); ii) Texts from Brazilian author Humberto de Campos, produced also through the mediumship of Chico Xavier; iii) Three novels from alleged spiritual authorship of Bezerra de Menezes, produced by the medium Yvonne do Amaral Pereira: A Tragédia de Santa Maria, Dramas da Obsessão and Uma História Triste.

The study strongly suggests that literary texts are a potential source of investigation for the possibility of the continuity of the human mind as an instance that manifests itself in texts via mediumistic activity.

The Parapsychological Association is an international professional organization of scientists and scholars engaged in the study of psi (or ‘psychic’) experiences, such as telepathy, clairvoyance, psychokinesis, psychic healing, and precognition. The primary objective of the PA is to achieve a scientific understanding of these experiences.

A longer version of this convention video, including the Q&A period, is available to PA members-only at There is a level of PA membership for everyone interested in the scientific and scholarly advancement of parapsychology. Learn more at:
