Using a Psychomanteum to Explore Apparitional Experiences | Christine Simmonds-Moore

Christine Simmonds-Moore, professor of psychology at the University of West Georgia, explored the nature and correlates of Exceptional Experiences (ExE) in a psychomanteum procedure, comparing synesthetes and non-synesthetes and the rated vividness, reality, and spatial nature of their experiences.

This study explored the correlations between the presence of anomalies and their experiential qualities and RNG output (Z scores), measures of electromagnetism (EMF meter output and AP values) and psychophysiology (Heart rate variability or HRV). Participants also completed the following questionnaires:

• Fantasy Questionnaire

• The Rasch version of the revised Transliminality

• The Boundary Questionnaire (short)

• One question about synesthetic experiences.

• Synesthetes provided details about their synesthesia and completed the Synesthesia Battery.

Thirty people participated (15 reported a prior experience with apparitions and 15 also had synesthetic tendencies). Baseline readings of EMF (in milliGauss) and RNG were taken, and the empty chamber was filmed for 45 minutes. Data collection was completed at the end of April 2019. The findings will shed light on individual differences, physiological and environmental correlates of intentional apparitional experiences.

Presented at the “62nd Annual Convention of the Parapsychological Association” on July 4, 2019, Paris, France; program chaired by Ramses D’Leon. Download the Abstracts at https://www.parapsych.org/articles/37/483/2019_pa_convention_abstracts_of.aspx

The Parapsychological Association is an international professional organization of scientists and scholars engaged in the study of psi (or ‘psychic’) experiences, such as telepathy, clairvoyance, psychokinesis, psychic healing, and precognition. The primary objective of the PA is to achieve a scientific understanding of these experiences.

A longer version of this convention video, including the Q&A period, is available to PA members-only at parapsych.org. There is a level of PA membership for everyone interested in the scientific and scholarly advancement of parapsychology. Learn more at: https://www.parapsych.org/join_the_pa.aspx
