Matthew Fox is a spiritual theologian, an Episcopal priest and an activist for gender justice and eco-justice. He has written 37 books. Among them are Original Blessing, The Coming of the Cosmic Christ, A Spirituality Named Compassion, The Reinvention of Work, The Hidden Spirituality of Men, Christian Mystics and The Pope’s War. Most recently, he has published Essential Writings on Creation Spirituality. He is founder of the University of Creation Spirituality in California.

Here he distinguishes creation spirituality from theology based on the fall and redemption of humanity. He discusses his early upbringing in Wisconsin and his education in the midwest. He describes the need for both mysticism – saying “yes” to all aspects of life – and prophecy, saying “no” to injustice. He maintains that all truth comes from the holy spirit. He also emphasizes the importance to exploring the depths and avoiding a superficial life.

This video is a special release from the original Thinking Allowed series that ran on public television from 1986 until 2002. It was recorded in about 1989.

A concern with nature and humanity is primary to the social conventions of organized religion.  Matthew Fox, a former Dominican priest and spiritual theologian, was director of the Institute for Culture and Creation Spirituality at Holy Names College.  He is author of numerous books including The Coming of the Cosmic Christ and Original Blessing. Fox says that spirituality is a joyful response to life itself.
