Visionary Experience or Psychosis?withJohn Weir Perry (1914-1998)

Books Mentioned In This Interview

This video is a special release from the original Thinking Allowed series that ran on public television from 1986 until 2002. It was recorded in about 1988.

A Jungian psychotherapist, John Weir Perry, MD, is author of many books including The Heart of History and The Far Side of Madness.  He suggests that the psychiatric community errs in treating visionary experience as a form of mental illness.  Psychiatric labelling and the use of anti-psychotic drugs serve to stifle the valuable integration of life’s mythic dimensions.  Dr. Perry suggests that throughout history, visionary experience has led to important resolutions of social conflicts.
