This video is a special release from the original Thinking Allowed series that ran on public television from 1986 until 2002. It was recorded in about 1990.

Marvin Minsky, author of The Society of Mind, was one of the founders of the mathematical theory of computation, artificial intelligence, and robotics. He was the Donnor Professor of Science at M.I.T., where he established the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. Here he proposed that conscious intelligence may be viewed as a computer system composed of many smaller parallel processing programs. He argues that understanding the individual as a very sophisticated machine actually affirms human dignity – offering new possibilities for growth and change.
