This video is a special release from the original Thinking Allowed series that ran on public television from 1986 until 2002. It was recorded in about 1996.
Daniel Matt, Ph.D., is professor of Jewish spirituality at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California. He is author of God and the Big Bang, The Essential Kabbalah, and Zohar: The Book of Enlightenment. Here he discusses the theological implications of the “big bang” cosmological theory, which asserts that the entire universe exploded from an infinitessimally small point. He notes that while the big bang story is inconsistent with the biblical account of creation, it is in harmony with the teachings of prophets, kabbalists, chassids and mystics.
